Active Living/Healthy Eating – It’s never too late to improve your health! We’ll tell you how small changes in diet and physical activity can add up to big improvements in the quality and quantity of your years.
Emergency Preparedness – Hurricanes, floods, blizzards, heat waves, tornadoes…Mother Nature sure knows how to dish it out. Are you in the know and ready to go for a variety of natural and manmade emergency events? NDDH has potentially life-saving information to share!
Fall Prevention – One in three adults aged 65 and older falls each year; many suffering life-altering injuries that can lead to permanent disability and death. On average, the hospitalization cost for a fall injury is $34,294. This adds up to nearly $30 billion in costs annually to the U.S. health care system, but the real toll is on the fall victim, family, and caregivers. We’ll provide an overview of fall prevention, help you take a home assessment quiz and share strategies that will keep you on your toes! The presentation can also be enhanced with a Postural Hypotension Blood Pressure Screening, which can identify attendees who may have postural hypotension, a low blood pressure condition that can be a risk factor for falling.
Food Safety – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that each year roughly 48 million people (1 in 6) get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 die of food borne diseases. There can be many challenges when it comes to preparing and consuming foods safely. We’ll teach you strategies – from soup to nuts – to help prevent getting food borne illness.
Handwashing – Handwashing is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of illness. This fun, engaging, and “hands-on” presentation is designed for youngsters, ages 5-10, to teach them where germs may lurk and how to avoid getting sick by learning how and when to wash their hands.
Heart Health – Building off of the success of our Follow the Fifty: Models of Heart Health Campaign, this presentation discusses heart disease – the number one killer of men and women. Learn what northeast CT did to launch a counter-attack against heart disease and what you can do to prevent it. What would you do with 3 billion heartbeats?!
Leading Poisoning Prevention – 535,000 U.S. children ages 1-5 have lead levels high enough to damage their health. Lead-based paint and lead contaminated dust are the most hazardous sources of lead for U.S. children. We have important information for anyone who may be caring for children under the age of six and they (or you) live in one of the 24 million housing units built before 1978 that may contain deteriorated leaded paint and elevated levels of lead-contaminated house dust.
Mosquito & Tick Borne Disease Prevention – Topics covered in our “What’s Bugging You?” presentation include how illness like Lyme Disease is transmitted, tick behavior, prevention strategies ranging from personal protection to deer-resistant plantings for your garden to keep white-tailed deer and their traveling companions (deer ticks) off your property. We can also add a discussion about Rabies and Mosquito-borne illnesses like West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis, or book them as a separate presentation.
Public Health Overview – Hundreds of millions of people utilize their public health system dozens of times a day without realizing it. NDDH wants you to know how we work to prevent illness, promote wellness, and protect your health each and every day.
The Ultimate Machine – Fueled Right to Finish Strong – A health and wellness presentation for high school students that addresses healthy eating, physical activity, social behaviors, substance misuse, and the recognition that every choices matters – health habits formed as a teen can set the course for life.
